Step 5
Your checklist
If you are reading this during planning season :
Time your planting to profit from spring light. Generally March to April.
Select and install a reliable heater sized for your tunnel.
Add ducts if your heater uses a blower (it ensures an even temperature and protects plant heads).
Install a
backup thermostat
and set it 3°F below your main target.
Set up a temperature alert system (e.g.,
AcuRite
,
Orisha
) to avoid unnoticed failures.
Plan your temperature targets by fruit load
(see Step 5, Tip #3)
.
Print a fruit load vs. temperature chart and install it in your tunnel.
If you are reading this during the growing season :
Include heating in your dehumidification pulses.
Adjust your temperature target based on :
- Current fruit load
- Daily sunlight levels (cloudy vs. sunny)
Watch your stem size (12" below the head).
Thicker than an AA battery = energy not used efficiently.
Adjust your temperature if the stem is too thick or the growth slows.
If your heater doesn't have ducts, consider shopping for a blower model before next season.
Install a backup
thermostat
and set it 3°F below your main target.
