Step 1 - Tip #5

Control the number of fruit per cluster

Keep only 3 fruit per cluster 6-8 weeks before the heatwave season.

Why ?

While we do want as many fruits as possible to earn a great revenue, fruits still are an energy drain for the plant. When it is 95°F, plants with too much fruit are exhausted.

This results in:

  • Smaller fruit
  • Lower-quality fruit
  • Longer ripening time
  • Slower growth for new clusters
  • Abortion of the next flowers
  • Lower yields for the rest of the season

A little itinerary

First two clusters of the plant: Keep 5 fruit

Next clusters: Keep 4 fruit

6 to 8 weeks before heat wave season (i.e., July in the northeast): Keep 3 fruit

8 weeks before the end of the season: Keep 5 fruit. (figure 1)

How to prune clusters

Pinch off the cluster as close as possible to the last flower you want to keep. (figure 2)

⚠️ Important note: When we say to prune your cluster at 3 fruit starting from 8 weeks before heatwaves, we mean the new clusters starting from that moment. Leave the previous clusters that are ripening intact.
