We thought his story might help other growers who are wondering if automation can assist them with greenhouse management.
"We have a small 1/3-hectare market garden in central Quebec, where we grow about forty organic vegetables for CSA boxes. Initially, we had two greenhouses in addition to the field as growing space. It wasn't that big, but greenhouse management was becoming an increasingly stressful task.
If you're not there when the wind picks up, or forget to adjust the panels when the temperature changes, it can have significant consequences on the yield and quality of the vegetables.
We constantly had to leave the field or other priority tasks to manage the greenhouse panels. For us, it became an unnecessary waste of time. The mental burden associated with manually controlling the greenhouses became quite heavy. The ever-present fear of forgetting to open or close the panels is stressful! If you forget, the consequences rest on your shoulders. Going out for dinner with friends was never as carefree as it should be! Time and stress management became quite demanding, I must say.
It was our Climax consultant who directed us to Orisha, a local company, for the automation and management of our greenhouses.
We're now in our third season with Orisha, and the biggest change is our quality of life. We notice healthier vegetables, fewer diseases, and we can extend our seasons by 2-3 weeks.
Since I can control everything remotely, I can go out with friends without stressing, and I save precious time in my day. Furthermore, the Orisha app allows me to stay informed through a graph that shows precisely what is happening in the greenhouse, enabling highly effective management. We were able to add a third greenhouse without hiring additional staff. We can now produce better while improving greenhouse management, so even though it takes a bit longer for field-grown vegetables, we still have diversified CSA boxes.
